He reminisce about an accident he caused as a year old which killed a young girl, an event that has made him feel revulsion for death. In many ways the scripts foreshadows Bergman's later obsessions. The film is heavy and world-weary. There are many dark elements, as the story follows a life that has witnessed much death. Existential doubts appear, as characters express how the world means nothing to them and is meaningless.
However this literal nihilism is undercut by the uplifting approach of the final scenes.

In Eva male authority figures, specifically fathers, are shown as strict and uncaring, introducing the look at harsh paternal figures that would be reflected again in Bergman's more personal works. Eva has a nice style to…. Although directed by Gustaf Molander, this has Bergman's print all over it. And the script indeed is by Bergman from a story he wrote.

But in spite of some good moments and actors, it's very uneven and rather gloomy. The tale of a young sailor Bo Bergman regular Birger Malmsten on leave and returning to his rural home, we learn quickly he's prone to melancholy and obsessed about death. This goes back to a traumatic death of a little blind girl which he inadvertently caused as a boy.
He has a romantic interlude with Eva Eva Stilberg , who cares for her elderly parents on an adjoining farm. Then goes back to the city and stays with a dissolute sexually-open couple,….

Jag har nu sett åtta talsfilmer med Ingmar Bergman association. I fyra av dem har han stått för både manus och regi. I den här står Bergman för manus och Gustaf Molander för regin. Men trots detta är det den här filmen av de åtta som har mest av det där ångestmättade uttrycket som senare kom att finnas i hans stora talsfilmer. Bo Birger Malmsten är huvudkaraktär i filmen, vi möter honom under hans barndomsår och under hans vuxna liv och då mötet med hans kärlek Eva.
Det är en händelse i barndomen som trycker Bo och ger hans ofta ångestfyllda utspel. Seeing a guy go through standard Bergman existential questions only to resolve them all by having a kid wasn't a sight I particularly wanted.

Still, I love Birger Malmsten's face, and there's a sequence in the middle that cannot be missed, because Eva Dahlbeck saunters in, through a sweltering cloud of heat, wearing as little as possible, and says, "This movie? It's mine now. Eva was written by Ingmar Bergman, but directed by Gustaf Molander. It is always interesting to see what other directors do with Bergman's scripts.
Molander directed a few Bergman scripts early in Bergman's career and he has a good feel for Bergman's fairly direct style at this point in his career. The existential weight and melancholic dread is still there, but it can be alleviated by love, or children, or family. Happiness is possible and almost to be expected. Bergman changes as he gets into the s and s and his films get better, but there is plenty in Eva to enjoy - the light or death struggle on the boat at the end, punctuated by memories; the strange and evocative murderous sex and death dream sequence.
